March 2008

To get you going, here is an example of how to plan a route from Southport to Shrewsbury using Traveline’s web site.

You will need to break down your journey into sections as there are no direct buses between the two towns. The sections will be Southport to Liverpool, Liverpool to Chester, Chester to Whitchurch and Whitchurch to Shrewsbury. If you need help with this, Google Maps comes in handy.

On the Traveline home page, click on the area of the map you will be starting in - in this case the North West of England, then click on Journey Planner. When a section of your journey strays outside one region you will need to go back to the home page to switch to another area.

When you are searching for your route, make sure you only select the ‘bus’ option.

The Traveline web site contains all the timetables and maps you need but it may take a little while to find the best route. Here are the results of the search. In total the journey would take 7 hours and 26 minutes:

9:29 - Leave Southport on the number 48, which runs every half hour.

10:44 - Arrive Liverpool 1 hour and 15 minutes later.

11:05 - Leave Liverpool on the number 401, which runs every 20 minutes.

12:16 - Arrive Chester 1 hour and 11 minutes later.

13:15 - Leave Chester on the number 41 or 41A, which runs hourly.

14:35 - Arrive Whitchurch 1 hour and 20 minutes later.

15:30 - Leave Whitchurch on the number 511.

16:55 - Arrive Shrewsbury 1 hour and 25 minutes later.
